Tools for emergent readers

A comfortable place to read is always a great start to engaging your students! These students enjoy cuddling up in a blanket, on a pillow, or on the heater while reading.
Tools can be an essential part to reading with younger children. It will enhance various skills associated with reading. For beginning readers, tracking is an important skill to ensure each word is identified. It also reiterates the point that spoken words can be written. I use finger pointers like witch fingers, pointers, and finger puppets. It creates a fun and enticing aspect to reading. Another tool I use in my literacy center is pvc pipe as telephones. It allows them to hear themselves as a reader. It also allows them to hear their fluency, volume and the expression in their voice as they read. The importance of students listening to themselves read is so they can self monitor their reading, self-correct, and reflect on their progress and how they can improve.
